Darryn and Hayley – Tourism Ambassadors – South Coast Kwazulu Natal
I do not normally post long posts on my blog, but these two athletes deserve the recognition. They are real ambassadors for tourism and I wish them all the success in the future.
I had the opportunity to create some brand images for Darryn and Hayley.
Darryn Purtell’s accomplishments which he has achieved in the few short years of his career are just the tip of the iceberg in his eye’s. He began cycling at age 16, during that year he completed a 3 day tour from Port Edward to Port St. Johns (PondoPedal) through some of the toughest terrain known to cyclists, he completed his first Hill2Hill, and climbed Kilimanjaro within that year. After little experience in both local and national races he won the KZN champs and the U23 KZN champs. 2010 saw him compete in his first marathon stage race thanks to the “ride like a pro” initiative that Joburg2C offer. Justin Porteous and Darryn finished off that first year in the top 10 with a similar performance the following year. In 2013 and a trade of brother’s Nick Porteous and Darryn rode strong, finishing in the top 10 overall and 5th in the Elite men’s category at Joberg2C. This year Darryn decided to expand his range and try his hand in the world of triathlon and Xterra. Although KZN triathlon Champs were very early in 2013 and he entered on a whim, he managed to take home the silver medal in his third ever triathlon. Next stop was the Totalsport Xterra Buffelspoort which doubled as SA X-tri Championships. He finished 15th overall and managed to take the win in his age group crowning him the SA u24 X-tri champ. It was then onto Grabouw, for SA Xterra Championship, he had an amazing race finishing 8th overall and taking yet another SA title home! These SA titles gained Darryn three international race invitations to World Champs in London, Netherlands and Hawaii which he has missed out on due to lack of sponsorship. A lost opportunity for athlete and brand to be showcase on an international platform.

Having seen his potential, Varsity College (Westville Campus) have offered Darryn a 100% bursary, as a motivator and leader for their mountain biking team for the next three years. His versatile strengths, gained him sponsorship through Itec connect for the second year running to race at the prestigious Joberg2C stagerace. GU have aided Darryn with sponsorship of products over the last few year and they will be renewing and upgrading his contract from ambassador status to full athlete for 2014.
Darryn’s current accomplishments are due to his own training program and mental capability. With the support of a strong brand that will allow greater access to resources his potential can only grow. He will continue on the path of becoming an international contender.
At the tender age of 19 years old Hayley Smith has had more life experiences than most youngsters her age and has still come out on top of her game. Having won her fair share of junior races and standing on the top step as the first Junior lady at the first ever ROCKY ROADS UCI event to take place at Cascades in Pietermaritzburg in 2012. Hayley transitioned from Junior’s to u23 this year and it has proved a welcome challenge during her final year of school. In 2014 Hayley plans to take her racing to the next level making training and racing a full time lifestyle.

Bell earthmoving equipment saw a distinct opportunity in Hayley’s talents very early in her career and have a continued vested interest in her potential. The future holds international stardom for this strong willed and determined young lady. With the luxury of time in 2014, her training regime and race appearances will increase. Hayley has a strong presence in the Industry and is known as the girl from Bell, with a strong PR plan for 2014 her reach can only grow and blossom into other sectors. Depending on Bell’s 2014 marketing plan there could be a synergy between brand and athlete. The essential marketing plan for any athlete is to have a social media reach, it is the best form of keeping fans regularly updated and interacting with them on a daily basis. The late Burry Stander had an enormous impact not only on Hayley’s cycling career but as a person as well. She looked up to him and in turn he saw her talent and aided in cultivating that in the early stages of her career and she will be eternally indebted to him. Hence Hayley would like to aid the charity which is being established by Cherise and the remainder of the Stander family in the 1.5M rule for road safety. Family travels have exposed Hayley to the harsh reality of rural areas in South Africa and being able to provide bicycles to as many children in the poverty stricken areas especially in the Eastern Cape areas is another passion of Hayley’s.
