Kelly and James in JHB

Kelly and James in the centre of Johannesburg, in Eloff Street.

I was born in Gauteng but my parents moved to the Kwazulu Natal South Coast when I was a young lad. One can say that I am a Durbanite as I have lived on the coast for most of my life. The closest I had come to Eloff Street since leaving JHB is during Monopoly…LOL. (I am not sure if the names have changed in the new version).

Gauteng was exciting. I know people long to live at the coast (and it is awesome), but JHB has a vibe, on the go, never sleeps.

I scouted for days to find a suitable location. On the Sunday (the day of the shoot), I went to visit some friends that were doing a shoot in Eloff Street. From all the stories, the centre of JHB is just scary………. especially for a guy that has no idea of where he is going and has to rely on “Siri” for directions. I arrived in Eloff Street, parked the car. I car guard came up to me and asked if he could watch the car, “sure”, I said and went into the building.

As I entered into the building, I  knew that this was the place I want to photograph Kelly and James. It was so awesome, I actually have no word to describe what I saw. I phoned Kelly and said get ready, we meeting in JHB. But I realised I did not have my gear with me, I was only visiting friends, my gear was back at the house I was staying at. Darn!

While chatting to my friends, I mentioned that I had parked in the street – “Go get your car, now, and park inside”. I panicked – I did a walk run to my car. I was met by the car guard. Opened up and all good. Everything was still in the car.  I gave the car guard a handsome tip and I decided to fetch my gear and should arrive back in time to meet Kelly and James.

The trip took about an hour there and back. While driving back, I saw the thunder clouds rolling in. That’s all I need now is for it to rain. But I knew it would be great evening if it rained as the building had some awesome locations.

I few minutes after I arrived back at Eloff Street, Kelly and James arrived. We met and chatted a bit and it started to thunder. As I picked up the camera, there was lighting, thunder and it started pouring. Luckily the first location was undercover but it still looked as though we were outdoors. As the afternoon continued, the clouds started dissipating and some amazing light come through.

I loved everything about this couple shoot, Kelly and James are such naturals and I really enjoyed spending time with them. Thanks Kelly and James for allowing me to create these memories for you.
