Meet the Versters | A Humbling Experience

Meet the Versters – a humbling experience.

Meet the Versters. This family  stems from Bloemfontein in the Freestate. They escaped the freezing temperatures (-3 & 18 degrees) of their home town for a getaway to Mtwalume on the Kwazulu Natal South Coast (where the average winter temperature is a warm 23 degrees).

I love the village of Mtwalume. Not much happens, it is your ideal holiday destination. No major shopping centers, no city life, just a beautiful beach where you will find mostly fisherman trying their luck.

Back to the Verster family. My heart is kinda split in two. I am overjoyed yet sad at the same time.

I am happy to see they family so united and spending quality time together and loving every minute of being in each other’s company. I love that Bobby (the older gentleman in the photos) is happy and full of life.

I am sad that Bobby has been diagnosed with Motor Nuron Disease (MND).  This is the same disease the Joost van der Westhiuzen had.

This is Bobby’s story:

In 2012, he cut his chin open while riding the slides at a waterpark. He required stitches just below his bottom lip, both inside the mouth and outside. There was numbness around the wound., which was to be expected. However, the numbness started to spread and move towards the upper part of the face.

The numbness got progressively worse so in 2016 he saw a neurosurgeon who sent him for an MRI scan. The scan revealed a tumour on the pituitary gland is a part of your endocrine system. Its main function is to secrete hormones into your bloodstream. This is scary it can cause blindness. But this had nothing to do with the numbness in Bobby’s face.

Bobby went to another neurosurgeon who referred him to Jody Pearl (the same specialist neurosurgeon who treated Jooste). After 6 months of polygam treatment (medication is used to strengthen the body’s natural defence system) and numerous tests, MRI and lumber punctures, Bobby was diagnosed with MND in April 2018.

Spending time with the family was so humbling. I loved ever second of it. I loved seeing the relationship between each one. I loved chatting to Bobby, who has an amazing spirit and love for each day.

I am overjoyed that I met the Versters and created memories for them.

Bobby, I pray that God gives you all the strength and grace you need for each day. I pray that He provides each one of you with loads of love and support through the months and years to come. I am humbled by your passion for living!

It was truly an honour for me to create these memories.
