Samantha and Jarrod Exchange Vows at Umthunzi Hotel
Samantha and Jarrod exchange vows at Umthuzni Hotel in Umtentweni (near Port Shepstone) on the Kwazulu Natal South Coast.
I truly believe that this wedding was blessed by the Almighty. The week leading up to the wedding, Sam and I had called each other daily. The weather prediction for her wedding day indicated that it would rain. I said to Sam, well we can’t change the weather, we can only prepare for it. Everything will work out – we will still have fun and we will make it work.
On the Friday morning, I checked and packed my gear. Umbrellas – check, change of clothing – check, rain coat – check!
On Friday evening, I met with Sam and Jarrod at the hotel to run through some final details and to discuss options, as the prediction was still rain for Saturday. While meeting, it started raining. But not just a drizzle, I mean the heavens opened and it poured. I left the venue and drove home. There was water running down the road like a river. I woke up a few time during the night and it was still raining. Woke up on Saturday morning and it was still raining. Great – we have a plan. We know what to do. Don’t stress. We will still be able to create some amazing stuff. Said my morning prayer and asked God to let the day be a success.
I started with Jarrod and the boys and ended up in the bar with them playing pool. We looked outside and the rain had stopped. It was still very overcast though. Please that it had stopped raining, we took a few photos outside.
I went onto the the girls. Sam was ready for me to start when I arrived. I said to Sam, “I think we may have some luck with the weather this afternoon.”
I think this maybe the time to tell you that I have actually known Sam her entire life. (this makes me feel super old). We are family friends. My dad and Royden (Sam’s dad) are best mates and we have been family friends for over 30 years. So there is a big emotional connection with Sam and the family. There was a tear shed when Royden saw Sam for the first time, not only Sam, but Royden, the rest of the family and I have to admit – me too.
Go to the ceremony. Jarrod sees Sam and he too get’s emotional.
What a beautiful ceremony. It was short and sweet and to the point. There were a few funny moments – Jarrod nervously getting a few words wrong. The pastor forgetting to say who gives Sam away……………
We walk out of the ceremony and while Sam and Jarrod are greeting guests, I look up and notice a bit of blue sky. Good this be? I then saw a bit of sunlight come through the clouds. I went to Sam and Jorrod and suggested we leave immediately.
Well, well ,well. Were we blessed with the most amazing hour of light.
We started the session at Umthunzi and then left the venue to a place that I know we would get an amazing sunset. Still busy with the session and the clouds rolled in and well, we did not get that sunset we wanted.
As we were driving back to the venue, on my word, this golden light appeared and there it was, this beautiful rainbow over the sea. Rainbows do not last long and I knew I had to work real quick. There was no time to set up lights (the only way I get expose Sam and Jarrod correctly and to capture the rainbow was to use a some sort of light). I grabbed my small flash, gave it to my assistant and “BOOM”. It did not work. Darn batteries. Replaced the batteries in a few seconds.
Thank you Sam and Jarrod for an amazing day. Thank you for allowing me to be part of your day – it was an honor.
Thank you God for allowing us to capture your canvas – such a blessing!
